Some 216,000 children – mostly boys – have been sexually abused by clergy in the French Catholic Church since 1950, a damning new inquiry has found.
 
The head of the inquiry said there were at least 2,900-3,200 abusers, and accused the Church of showing a “cruel indifference towards the victims”. A senior figure in the French Church expressed “shame and horror” over the findings, and asked for forgiveness.
 
One of those abused said it was time the Church reassessed its actions.

An investigation into alleged sex abuse of children and young people by French Catholic priests, deacons and other clergy has found about 216,000 victims of paedophilia from 1950 to 2020. When lay members of the Church, such as teachers at Catholic schools are included, the number of child victims climbs to 330,000 across the seven-decade period.
The landmark report, released on Tuesday follows widespread outrage about a string of paedophilia claims and prosecutions of Church officials worldwide.

A report into sexual abuse within the French Catholic Church has estimated that more than 200,000 children were assaulted by clergy over the past 70 years.
 
The independent commission said the church had been guilty of negligence, cruel indifference and institutional cover-up.
 
The report found that much of the abuse took place in the 1950s and 60s – too long ago for any perpetrator to face prosecution.

Jesuit priest and academic Father Frank Brennan has discussed the first general assembly of the Catholic Church’s Plenary Council, which started on Sunday.

The first of two assemblies will be held over the next six days, with roughly 280 members meeting virtually from around the country.

“What I have found consoling, being an advisor to the group of 280, because we can’t meet face to face – on their webpages they’ve got little video clips they’ve done of each of them,” Fr Brennan told Sky News Australia.

“I have found it so refreshing, particularly the young people … expressing what for them it is to be a member of the Church. “

Fr Brennan noted being a member of a church is no longer “trendy”, nor “popularly expected” – which makes the meetings particularly important.

“So, if you are a member of a church, and particularly the Catholic Church, there’s something there that you’re looking for that you just don’t find in society at large,” he said.

“And the question is: how can that be done so that we can espouse what we think is the kingdom of God, that is good news for everyone – not just those who are members of the Church.”
